TUESDAY 9 JUNE 2015
Jane, Christine, Lorraine and Caroline met at Caroline's house to discuss George Orwell's Animal Farm and 1984.
Sally who was not able to be with us, enjoyed 1984 despite it being "a bit hard going at times". Lorraine found it too sinister to finish reading it.
Anne who was unable to come at the last minute, enjoyed re-reading 1984 but found Animal Farm a "re-run of 1984". Sally agreed with this.
Jane, Christine and Caroline found 1984 a powerful book which had marked their late teenager years as it certainly did millions of others. These books have remained references long after the date 1984. The book 1984 remains up to date and there is a lot we can compare with our present -day war-faring world.
Jane, having re read Animal Farm, commented on the society set up amongst the farm animals and how quickly Napoleon the pig became a 'Stalin' and slipped into a two-legged being's shoes whilst the very stupid sheep and chicken were happy to follow the ever changing rules.
Orwell's perception of the world and the men and women who live in it very pertinant. We feel inspired to read more of Orwell's books and Lorraine would like to know more about the author himself.
The dates for our autumn meetings and the books to read have been decided:
8th September Girl on the Train Jane's house
6th October I Pilgrim Christine's house
10th November Guliver's Travels Lorraine's house
8th December Enduring Love - McEwan Anne's house
