STONER by John Williams ( October 2014 )
Christine Hirst, Caroline Da Costa and Jane Brocard met at Anne Gordon's house on Tuesday 7 October to discuss Stoner by John Williams. Sally Bell and Lorraine Daniell sent their apologies.
It was absolutely agreed by all at the meeting and also SB and LD that this book is a beautifully written, moving account of a young man falling in love with literature.
I think the word for William Stoner is stoical. He arrived at university to study agriculture but
found a vocation as a literary scholar. In less than 300 pages, the novel presents a complete biography of Stoner, from his rural birth to the fading of his memory among colleagues and students after his death. The book records a sad marriage, the birth and growth of his daughter, a love affair, professional enmity and the last moments of his life.
The book was rated 4-5 stars and is highly recommended.
Next book club will be at Caroline Da Costa's on Tuesday 4 November 10.30am
